Introduction To Solar Thermal
Solar Thermal Water Heating – Use the energy from the sun to provide hot water for your home or business. A solar thermal water heater can provide up to 70% of your property’s hot water whilst, saving you money on your energy bills.
By using the heat from the sun a solar thermal panel will heat household water throughout the day, reducing the requirement for a traditional oil or gas boiler to heat the water and therefore reducing your household energy bills.
Solar Thermal installations are eligible for the government backed Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme. Owners of systems are paid per kW of energy they generate and payments last for a total of seven years for domestic installs and twenty years for non-domestic.
Where Is a Solar Thermal System Installed?
Flat plate and vacuum tube thermal collectors can be installed on pitched roofs, flat roofs, ground mounted or on bespoke fixings. The key to a solar thermal system is to maximise the amount of sun which hits the panels. Avoid shading and aim for Southern orientation if possible.
How Does Solar Thermal Work?
Solar Thermal panels come in two forms, evacuated tubes and flat plate collectors. They absorb the heat transmitted by the sun which is transferred through a glycol fluid into a hot water cylinder in the property. The heated water can then be used as normal, without a boiler ever being fired.
How Hot Does The Water Get
It’s actually the glycol fluid inside pipework which gets hot and transfers the heat into the hot water cylinder. The glycol can reach temperatures of 120 degrees during bright sunlight. However, the heat will be dumped into the cylinder. Once the cylinder is at the set temperature the thermal system will stop providing heat.
How Much Heat Will A Solar Thermal System Generate?
This depends on a few system specifics. How many thermal panels are installed, the pitch and orientation of the panels and the geographic location of the system.
A typical 2 panel flat plate collector type system on a 30 degree South Facing roof will generate around 1500kWhs per year. Adding more panels will of course increase this.
Solar Thermal Design and Installation
The Greener Group solar thermal team provide design, supply and installation of solar thermal flat plates and evacuated tubes, with on-going service and support. We are accredited to the government backed Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) and will also give support when applying for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), to ensure the whole process from start to finish runs smoothly.
Solar Thermal Installation and Maintenance
The Greener Group supply, install, service and maintain solar thermal heating systems throughout the UK.
CAN SOLAR THERMAL BE COMBINED WITH OTHER FORMS OF RENEWABLE HEATING?
Yes! Solar thermal systems can be combined with air source heat pumps to create a truly eco-friendly home. Other renewable systems also come with their own set of government incentives, which are worth enquiring about.
