The Renovation Heating Challenge

The client was carrying out a full renovation and refurbishment on a cottage in Guilden Sutton, Chester. There was previously no central heating system in the house so it was a blank slate in terms of selecting the right heating system for the property.

Having considered traditional heating technologies including an oil boiler the client opted for a 16kW Samsung Air Source Heat Pump. The benefits of low cost heating, clean fuel (no messy oil deliveries) and an attractive financial incentive made their mind up. The Samsung Air Source Heat Pump is located at the bottom of the garden and once complete will be out of sight. The heat pump is connected to the house by 15 meters of 32mm microflex duo pre-insulated pipe. Buried in the ground it retains heat and does not disrupt the garden.

The Air Source Heat Pump – The clients opted for a 16kW Samsung ASHP. It Comes with a 7 year warranty on parts.

The Hot Water Cylinder – The 3 bedroom property will be adequately supplied by the joule 300 litre unvented domestic hot water cylinder

The Pre-insulated Pipe – The heat is delivered from the heat pump in the garden via 20m of Microflex Pre-insulated buried pipe.

The Control Box – The brains of the system is installed on the cylinder.The Samsung control unit manages both side of the installations and keeps the system running optimally.

Connecting The ASHP To The Property

The pre-insulated pipe rises from the ground and penetrates the external wall to enter the building. Inside the property the copper pipe-work runs along the back wall (to be hidden behind utility units) and connects into the pre plumbed 200 litre hot water cylinder. The central heating circuit connections are also made here.

Air Source Heat Pumps are an efficient way of heating a property offering efficiency levels of between 3 and 4 to 1 (depending on external air temperature). 1kW of energy in (used to power the fan which sucks air from the outside into the unit) and gives up to 4kW of heat energy out. When comparing to standard electric heaters this can make savings of 50% – 75%. When comparing with fossil fuels an ASHP cost per kW is comparable to gas and oil (at todays prices, they will go up by an estimated 50% in the next 5 years).

The Renewable Heat Incentive

Another benefit of installing an Air Source Heat Pump is that they are eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive.  Based on the heat demand of the property as listed on the EPC the RHI is paid using that deemed heat demand (there are some exceptions). Heather Cottage has an EPC heat demand of 28,000kWh’s per year. This equates to annual RHI payments of around £1,600. The domestic RHI is paid for 7 years so the total RHI will be £11,200, covering the cost of the installation and providing a profit.

Heat Pumps For a Renovation Projects

Air Source Heat Pumps are a suitable heating technology for a range of different property types. They can be combined with a fossil fuel boiler for large drafty houses, work extremely well with underfloor heating and are an excellent choice for new-build of gas properties.
