Biomass Boiler Service and Maintenance
Is Your Biomass Operating Efficiently?
Biomass boilers need to be serviced regularly. There is no way around it, they get clogged up with ash and dust and if left to their own devices for too long will fail. It is usually a quick fix but it often happens at the most inconvenient times.
The frequency on boiler service is determined by the amount of use the boiler has also known as the boiler run hours. The boiler pictured on the right is an ETA 199kW chip boiler. A standard service is recommended every 2500 run hours or once a year, whichever comes first. An extended service is then required every 5000 run hours.
Each biomass boiler is different and comes with its own set of manufacturer recommendations for service and cleaning – but they are all similar. It’s important you keep up to date with your service checks and cleaning or you boiler could lose efficiency, affecting both the heat supply to your home or business and the return you can expect to receive from the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Servicing yearly will also ensure your warranty remains valid on your boiler.
What’s Included In Our Biomass Servicing Package?
During an inspection, our trained engineers will check the following aspects of your boiler;
- Strip boiler down and inspect
- Check the grate and combustion chamber
- Check the down pipe for dirt
- Cleaning flue gas collection chamber and the heat exchanger
- Clean WOS
- Clean the induced draught fan
- Clean the flue gas pipe
- Clean flue gas temperature sensor
- Take flue gas measurement
- Check the earthing system is intact and up to standard
- Ensure the insulation of live parts is undamaged
- Check the door closures and seals to ensure still tight
- Check for any leaks in the piping of the boiler
- Inspect start-up plug
- Produce servicing and performance certificate
Our engineers will always follow the manufacturers service guide and complete as required. It is often a requirement to have an annual service on your biomass boiler to keep the warranty valid.
Whilst on site, all components will be checked for wear and tear and recommended to be replaced as necessary.– These checks can help to prolong the lifespan of your boiler.
Depending on the boiler size the servicing can usually be completed in a day. It is imperative that the boiler has been switched off in plenty of time (ideally the night before) to cool down before our engineers arrive on site. Whilst there, we can offer you any help and support you may need in the continuing use of your biomass boiler.

Biomass boilers are mechanical and as such do go wrong from time to time, especially if not maintained regularly. We offer a biomass breakdown and repair service to get your boiler back up and running. Having experience with log, pellet and chip boilers from 10KW up to 400kW we have the skills and knowledge to determine the problem and come up with a solution. Depending on your location we can normally get out to a breakdown within 48 hours and sometimes sooner.
If you are having problems with your installation and would like some advice / troubleshooting please contact us and we would be happy to help.
Biomass Boiler Additional Products & Services
As well as servicing and maintaining your biomass boiler we also offer a number of other products and services to compliment your existing installation.
Fuel Store Maintenance – Prevent breakdowns and blockages
It’s not only the boilers themselves which need maintaining but fuel stores also. Wood fuel hoppers, pellet stores in particular, need to be cleaned annually to remove the fines and dust that can accumulate throughout the year, and which can cause you problems with your boiler or fuel delivery system.
Smart Thermostat Upgrade – Control your heating from anywhere!Would you like to control your heating when out and about or from your armchair? There are a range of wireless internet enabled thermostats available to compliment your energy efficient heating.
Radiator Maintenance – Clean, protect and improve.
Radiators can corrode over time, especially if the inhibitor has not been regularly checked. They become full of debris and sludge and can reduce the output of the heating system and lead to damage on the boiler.
Radiator Upgrade – Improve the efficiency of your heating system!
Old radiators are often under sized and inefficient. If you have rooms which you can’t get warm its likely the radiators are under sized. It may be time to consider upgrading them.
